Universal Design Is One of Our Specialties.
The premise behind this whole approach is to increase the safety and functionality of the space with an updated beautiful aesthetic, which can often feel more spacious or “airy”.

What is Universal Design or Aging in Place?
Sometimes called “Better Living Design” or “Aging in Place” design, a Universal Design approach melds a safe, practical and accessible conveniences with a modern and updated aesthetic.
Improved efficiency and ease in navigating and using the space for the people who live there, or who visit often.
Clients may look at incorporating Universal Designs into their home if they’d simply like to make it safer and easier to live in their home for as long as possible, or if special needs are assessed and required.
Doorways may be built to a 36” width, according to Universal Design. Wider doorways give a more spacious, airy feel to a space, while also being able to accommodate say, a wheelchair.
Why would you incorporate Universal Design?
Perhaps the owner’s parent or loved one may visit often and wider doorways would be easier and safer for that loved one to manage. Maybe it will be easier to have that loved one move and live with the owner one day with a safer design in place.
Or, maybe an owner is looking to stay in their home for as long as possible and wants to remodel with Universal Design features to ensure ease of use and navigation as they age.
Wider doorways are just one instance to a Universal Design method. There are many more, with new thoughts and designs continuing to come forward every day.

Best projects for Universal Design are...
Both bathroom and kitchens are great remodel projects to introduce Universal Design to your home. These projects are appealing for children of seniors, older adults and Baby Boomers. This type of design functionality can really improve efficiency and create ease for the use of the space, but can also make a space safer as well.
We’ve all seen the statistics that falls and accidents happen frequently in kitchens and bathrooms. Why is this? Water is available in both rooms. In bathrooms, you may have a slippery tile floor, or the water may be set at a temperature hot enough to burn the skin.
In kitchens, the same elements may exist, but there are also stove burners and oven elements, knives or other blades inside of appliances. If a person is distracted and trying to cook or prepare food, an injury can (and many times does) occur.
Kitchen or bath remodels are the best projects to introduce a Universal Design approach into your home. Not only for yourself, but also for guests.
